Bud's war years

Bud went to war with the Navy sometime in '41. He was a Machinist Mate and spent his 3 year service in Chicago fine tuning and calibrating airplane carburetors. Sometime in the first year, Bud sent for Peg to get married. Peg was a looker.  That, I can confirm.

The story goes that Bud was up on a balcony in a couple 100 yd long building when she arrived. She had taken a train to Chicago From LA Ca. Back during the 2nd world war trains were almost exclusively used for transporting military personnel, and she had to stand the abuse of three days on that train with hundreds of servicemen offering her their services....but she remained pure as the driven snow to her hunky man in Chicago. :)

On the day Peg arrived in Chicago she had to walk all the way thru that 200 yd building to get to where Bud was among hundreds of sailor all hooting, whistling, and making catcalls. What an introduction to the military.

So they were married and Bud finished up his service and they went back to Huntington Beach. Bud then started Art School on the GI Bill....all the while going back to his moto roots.  In part of Bud's art career, he painted/drew pictures for aero companies of proposed aircraft designs in order to sell to the government.

 He began to run more and more dirt enduros or 'Hare and Hounds' as they called them then. He said that one of his finest moments was one race that was going into the mountains when they had gotten some kind of weather report of probable snow up there.

Well, Bud took old motorcycle chains and made 10" section where he could master link them around the wheel and tire. He put  them on his back tire then blew the tire up so the chains were tight. He said that the snow came and that the chains really worked. He remembered driving by other riders that were stopped on the course from fatigue. He said he finished 15th out of hundreds of rider. He was always pretty crafty.

........and Bud was in all those pictures that you see of the 1500 riders lined up across the desert at the start of those epic Barstow to Vegas races way back when.
